Friday Follies
Manual Labor Redux Following up last week’s question about reading writing/grammar guides, this week, we’re expanding the question…. Scenario: You’ve just bought some complicated gadget home . . . do you read the accompanying documentation? Or not? Do you ever read manuals? How-to books? Self-help guides? Anything at all? Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave […]
Ten on Tuesday: Good stuff
This week’s Ten on Tuesday topic, “10 Things You’re Really Good At,” is the kind of topic I find difficult to address. While I was thinking about it earlier in the week, Meg Fowler posed some related musings on Twitter: megfowler: here’s a question: which is more your style, self-promotion or self-deprecation? and why? megfowler: do you think self-promotion = arrogance? and self-deprecation = humility/down to earth? megfowler: i find the bias that people attach […]
Ten on Tuesday encore, with special guests!
This is a special follow-up to this week’s Ten on Tuesday post, with – the Talls! My husband Tall Paul occasionally likes to give his own answers to the memes I do here, and he lets me post them; this time, my stepdaughter Tall Girl wanted to play too. It’s two guest posts for the price of – well, nothing. Nothing more than tolerating my editorial comments, anyway. Ladies first, so here are Tall Girl’s […]
Friday Follies: 123, it’s FFI and BTT
Manual Labor May 8, 2008 Writing guides, grammar books, punctuation how-tos . . . do you read them? Not read them? How many writing books, grammar books, dictionaries–if any–do you have in your library? Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves! I’d really never thought about this question before, probably […]
Ten on Tuesday: New travels, plus random nosiness
This week’s Ten on Tuesday theme, “10 Places You’d Love to Travel To (That You Haven’t Gone to Yet),” presents a bit of a challenge for me. It’s not that I don’t want to travel more, but some of the places I’d most like to visit are places that I’d be returning to, so I can’t include cities like New York, San Francisco, and Boston on this list. When I thought about it, I ended […]
Friday Follies: BTT, FFI…but no 123
My list of books in progress hasn’t significantly changed since last week, so I’m skipping the Page 123 meme this Friday. No news isn’t necessarily good news…it’s just no news. But since I’m doing Book Binge during May (have you signed up yet? MaryP is posting the participant list today, so hurry on over!), I’ve got some incentive to make some more reading progress in the next few weeks, so I expect to visit a […]
A quirky Ten on Tuesday, plus ten more…
**Holy moly – this is post #500! Where does the time go?** I think this week’s Ten on Tuesday is a bit like the “7 Random Things About Me” meme (which I’ve never done, by the way) – it’s asking for “10 Superstitions, Traditions, and/or Personality Quirks.” That’s a topic with potential and a lot of wiggle room. I do not like to rush in the morning. I need time for my morning grooming/dressing routines, […]
Friday Follies 4-25: BTT, FFI, 123
Springing April 24 25, 2008 Well, here where I live, Spring is sprung–weeks early, even. Our lilac bush looks like it will have flowers by this time next week instead of in the middle of May as usual. The dogwood trees, the magnolia trees–all the flowering trees are flowering. The daffodils and crocuses are, if anything, starting to fade. It may only be April 24th but it is very definitely Spring and, allergies notwithstanding, I’m […]
Ten on Tuesday 4-22: Loving it…and the iPod Random Ten, too!
“Love, love, love…” Everybody sing! There are things to love. There are lists of love. There’s even a whole day dedicated to love every week in Blogland. This week’s Ten on Tuesday topic, “10 Things You Love About Your Life,” seems designed to force positive thinking, and that’s pretty positive in itself. For once, I’m going to try to limit myself to a simple list without a lot of editorializing; let’s see if it works. […]
Friday Follies 4-18: BTT, FFI, and another book meme
Vocabulary – Booking Through Thursday 4-17-08 Suggested by Nithin: I’ve always wondered what other people do when they come across a word/phrase that they’ve never heard before. I mean, do they jot it down on paper so they can look it up later, or do they stop reading to look it up on the dictionary/google it or do they just continue reading and forget about the word? Don’t forget to leave a link to your […]
Ten on Tuesday 4-15: Hahaha! LOL! Favorite Comedies
Before we get started, a PSA for you married folks: this coming Saturday, April 19, is Husband Appreciation Day! And while we’re appreciating spouses, mark your calendar – wives get equal time on September 20. —————————————————–I think a sense of humor is an essential survival tool for modern life; as St. Jimmy of Key West once said, “If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.” Therefore, I love this week’s Ten on Tuesday topic, […]
