Advice for the expectant parent of baby #2 – reminds me of why I stopped with one. But regardless of how it comes together, a family is a family.

I may have mentioned at some point or another that one of my roles in my first marriage was that of a faculty wife (for the record, I don’t miss it in the slightest). In that capacity, we regularly hosted dinners at home for First Husband’s students; we never came close to burning anything down, though, thank goodness. (Then again, we usually didn’t do cookouts; but I can still make a fantastic vegetarian lasagna, thanks to years of practice.) This couple just celebrated their first wedding anniversary, and we get to share it with them in this wonderful love letter.

Another look at parallels between interviewing, work and dating (dating as work is another story for another day), and why self-knowledge is important for success in both arenas. Speaking of work, this is the big reason why I chose my career – accounting never goes out of style. (Because it’s never in style. In fact, it has a reputation for being pretty style-impaired.)

Ten signs of a tech-savvy mom

In responding to a comment on last week’s Weekend Assignment, I mentioned that I find movie reviews harder to write than book reviews – here’s a quick primer on the basics.

A thoughtful, provocative post on “postmodern Christianity”

If anyone belongs in the New Jersey Hall of Fame, it’s Bruce Springsteen.

Nerdy women dig funny men. It’s just a fact of life.” More truth-telling from The Park Bench. It’s a fact of my life, anyway – have you met my husband? On a related note, this is not about our wedding.

====================================
I appropriated this from Karen at Verbatim.

Below are 7 partial questions. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to copy and paste them into the Comments section, filling in the blanks with anything you want. I’ll do my best to answer as honestly as I can.

1. What do you think of ________?

2. When did you last ________?

3. ________ or ________? Why?

4. What did you ________?

5. What’s your favorite ________?

6. How would you ________?

7. Whom would you most like to ________?

And I’ve got a question for you: How independent are you?

Your Independence Level: High

You are extremely self reliant and autonomous.

You are definitely into doing your own thing.

But you also wouldn’t turn down help if you needed it.

You follow your own path, but you don’t do so blindly.

As a sister accountant, I just have to say: LOL 🙂

  3. Answers to Mike‘s questions:

    1. What do you think of the Loc Ness Moster?
Very little, really. I would probably think about it more if I were going to Scotland.

    2. When did you last eat brussel sprouts?
1988, maybe? Seriously, it was about that long ago. I tried them once to see if I’d hate them as much as I thought I would – and I did.

    3. Motorcycle or moped ? Why?
Motorcycle – for my husband, since he dearly wants another one, and he’ll take me riding (sometimes).

    4. What did you think of the reviews for the new Indy movie that are coming out now?
I’m trying to avoid them. We already have tickets for the Saturday matinee, and I want to keep my mind open.

    5. What’s your favorite swear word? (you can allude to it if you don’t want to write it)
Depends on the context. When driving, it’s usually “F— you, f—head! What the f— is wrong with you?”

    6. How would you get to work if you couldn’t drive?
I’m in Los Angeles. I’d need to get a different job if I couldn’t drive. I wish I were kidding.

    7. Whom would you most like to get an autograph from?
Someone whose signature I could actually read.

You didn’t think you’d get real serious answers, did you? 😀

  5. Answers to Janet’s questions:

    1. What do you think of eating only local veggies and in season?
I like the idea, but I am not good about putting it into practice – partly because I don’t really eat a lot of vegetables. I’m not sure I could do it exclusively, though.

    2. When did you last wash your kitchen floor?
I think it was a couple of weeks ago. “I think” means I’d probably better plan on doing it this weekend!

    3. Harry Potter or LOTR? Why?
Books-wise, it’s Harry. I like the way the stories bridge the ordinary and magical worlds. I also found LOTR to be rather ponderous reading 🙂 – but when it comes to the movies, it wins out over HP.

    4. What did you make for dinner last night?
My husband cooked – grilled chicken and corn on the cob. I heated up the breadsticks, though :-D.

    5. What’s your favorite movie character?
I’m going to wuss out on this – I can’t pick just one!

    6. How would you go about becoming more patient, if you weren’t patient to begin with?
Good question. I think I would put myself into situations where I’d be forced to slow down and wait, and experiment with ways to fill that waiting time.

    7. Whom would you most like to take pictures of?
My dog – she’s very photogenic :-). And I guess I’d better say the kids, too.
