My husband is a very good amateur photographer, but he’s always working on improving his skills. He’s been interested in pursuing portrait photography for a while, and is starting to assemble some of the tools he needs for that – backdrop, reflectors, etc. – in addition to his digital SLR camera (a Canon 5D Mark II, for those of you who know about that stuff). He spent some time testing his setups on himself this weekend – he got a very good self-portrait out of it, which his Facebook friends and Twitter followers have already seen – but ideally, he’ll be shooting portraits of other people.
I tend to despise most pictures of myself. Perhaps I just see myself in my mind’s eye as looking better than I actually do, but in any case, the camera rarely feels like my friend. The pictures taken at Tall Paul’s and my wedding are among the few I truly like, and the avatar I’ve used on this blog, Twitter, and Facebook for the last few years was cropped from one of them. But I’ve been thinking that I probably should make my public face more current – truth in advertising and all that – so I asked Tall Paul if I could be his next portrait test subject.
Once I relaxed a little, it was actually pretty fun, and we ended up with three reasonably flattering avatar prospects. I’m having trouble deciding which one I like best, so I’m asking for your help. I’ll post all three of the photos here – tell me in the comments which one you like best! I’m not promising I’ll go with the majority vote, but I’d like to get some other views on the subject (pun totally intended).
Let me know what you think in the comments! I’ll make my decision by the end of the week.
