I really can’t manage to stay away from this place very long, can I? But I did need that couple of days off last week. Thanks for not deserting me in the meantime!
We have decided that we won’t seriously consider getting another pet before this fall at the earliest, since we’ve got those summer trips to the East Coast and Comic-Con planned. Notice I said “pet,” not “dog.” A dog is our first choice, but given the amount of time we have to be away from home, perhaps this isn’t the best time of our lives to have one. We may think about “going to the dark side,” as my son put it – that is, becoming the servants of a cat (you own a dog, but a cat owns you). It would have to be a pretty dog-like cat, though…
Thanks again to everyone who has offered their kind thoughts and condolences.
Personal Dilemma of the Week:
I think tying the BBCon into BEA was a great idea, and will probably serve both events very well. But BBCon/BEA and BlogHer’10 are two months apart and being held in the same city, so I strongly suspect that for most book-oriented bloggers it will come to a choice, and they won’t make the same choice I did – especially if, like for me, there’s long-distance travel involved. It’s enough to make me think about selling my ticket for BlogHer (which IS possible, but getting back my room deposit isn’t) and signing on for the BBCon instead…but when it comes down to it, I suspect I won’t do that.
I truly hate to miss out on the Book Blogger Con, but I’m actually OK with not going to BEA.* BEA is a publishing-industry event, not a public one – and although bloggers can attend as press, I don’t feel that I’m part of the industry or that my blog is a “media outlet.” While I’d like to be, as Amy recently put it, “fully immersed in the bookish community,” it’s just not realistic for me. I’m a reader, and while I’m here to talk about books I read and the thoughts they inspire, promotion of particular books is at my own discretion (usually).
Granted, the behind-the-scenes stuff is undoubtedly interesting, and the opportunity to meet authors in person is certainly exciting. And then there’s the undeniable appeal of acquiring lots galleys and books. Besides, the BBCon itself only lasts for one day, so it certainly makes more sense to make a 3000-mile trip for the combination of BEA and the Con (although that’s probably less of an issue for those living closer to New York City).
*Feel free to quote me on that when I do an about-face on it at some point in the future!
Meanwhile, I’m not giving up (yet!) on trying to get book bloggers to BlogHer’10, whether we get that Room of (Y)our Own or not! (BTW, thanks to everyone who’s already voted up that ROYO proposal on BlogHer.com!)
As far as content goes, the wider range of programming topics and sessions at BlogHer appeals to me. I think that it comes down to a question of what I want to get out of the conference itself, and what BlogHer offers seems to fit with my goals as a blogger.
Still, here’s what’s REALLY at the root of all this second-guessing: my own personal insecurities, and uncertainty about where and how I fit into the blogging community – particularly when it crosses into the off-line world. Falling off the radar, being left on the sidelines, being in the wrong place at the wrong time – it all comes down to social anxiety, in one way or another.
Moving on….
* Drivers seem to be more courteous to me on the freeway lately. Is it because they can tell I’m driving a brand-new car? I guess the lack of license plates makes it rather obvious. Will the normal rudeness resume once the plates are in place? I’m not complaining, of course – I just can’t figure out any other reason why people are actually staying back to let me change lanes when I signal. In related news: three weeks, no dings! In other related news: I have probably jinxed myself for week #4.
* Good news/bad news: Lost returns tonight (yay!) for its final season (boo!). Here are one blogger’s picks for the show’s 25 Best Moments.
* I have only managed to read two-and-a-fraction books so far this year. I’d like to think that has nowhere to go but up. But if I weren’t so hooked on certain TV shows, and if I got off-line more often, I’d kick the number up faster. Oh well…it’s all trade-offs, isn’t it?
* One number I don’t want to look at is that “Body Test” result on the Wii Fit. The good news is that I’m able to spend some time on it every morning now (again with the trade-offs), and I think I’m starting to feel and see some changes, but the Fit usually disagrees with me, so I’m avoiding the conversation.
* Word verification on a comment somewhere: “tohyphr.” “Too hyper?” Not lately :-). Another word verification: “etype.” Is that what I do when I type on my e-reader – or when I type the letter “e”?
* Oops, I almost forgot to mention groundhogs! Then again, here in SoCal, we don’t have a whole lot of winter weather for them to mention, so let’s call it even.
What tangents have you been wandering down lately? Oh, and thanks to my friend Wendy (Literary Feline), who has become an official “Tuesday Tangents” participant (even when I’ve missed a Tuesday myself!).
I totally forgot about Groundhog Day, too.
I'm thinking of maybe planning a blogger lunch in Santa Barbara in April. I know you said you'd drive north, I'm hoping maybe a few others will too if we plan in afternoon in SB? And besides, SB has better bookstores than SLO. 😀
I like your philosophy about book blogging. I'm a reader, too.
Meeting authors can be fun, but it's often a bit of a letdown for me. It's what they do in private I like, generally, not what they can do in public.
I think we all feel some insecurities about our blogs from time to time. I sure would love to meet you some day!
Cat?! Cat?! I…I can't think of anything else to say.
Cat?
🙂
Jill (Softdrink) – Assuming the timing works out, I'd love any excuse to go up to Santa Barbara! I e-mailed you :-).
Jeanne – I love being part of the book-blogging community, but I have mixed feelings about the prospect of that community being absorbed into the book industry, I guess. But I could do a 180 on the whole thing, who knows :-)?
Kathy (Bermudaonion) – That makes me feel a little better…and I'd love to meet you one of these days, too!
Mike – I've said a couple of times that if it came down to a cat or no pet at all, I'd get a cat. We'll see. Tall Paul is iffy about the prospect :-), and the kids have cats at their mom's house already. But in any case, we won't rush it.
I'm sorry to hear about Gypsy. I just wanted to stop by and say that I can relate to your feelings about BEA/BBCon. I, too, want to be more a part of the book blogging community, but I'm not sure that event is right for me either. I'm interested in connecting with other bloggers and talking about what we are reading. I'm glad I came across your blog!
Laura – I love the Book Blogger Con idea and am kind of sorry I committed to BlogHer'10 before I knew it was in the works. That's where the connecting will happen, more so than at BEA itself, I think.
And I'm glad you came across my blog too, so I could find yours!
