Dispatches: Links of the Week

The new FTC guidelines for bloggers (.pdf) who review – the topic of the week, distilled down to the essence; why ethical blogging matters, even without the FTC watching; now that the FTC regulations require honest, fully-disclosed reviews, will you be blogging your reviews any differently?
(Note: links to responses applying specifically to book-review blogs will be highlighted in this week’s Sunday Salon post)

Even in precarious economic times, sometimes you might wonder whether you should quit your job

Do you enforce any of these “house rules” at your house? How much do you try to protect your kids from learning about the scary stuff? Also: a single mom’s open letter to the President (who, let’s not forget, was raised by a single mom)

Aside from books, clothes (and shoes!) are probably my biggest shopping vice – I could use this advice on how to stop buying clothes that never leave the closet.

What random – and accurate, practical and useful – information do you know? (Most of my random info is basically useless trivia and clutter.) And how much of it do you find yourself over-sharing online?

Periodic reflection on why you blog is part of the process. Do time and circumstances ever change your motivation to blog? Somewhat related: what’s your approach to comment etiquette – do you drop blogs who never return your comments?

Six simple ways to become a Twitter outcast; Google explains what a browser is (hint: it’s NOT the same thing as a search engine!)

New Arrivals in my Google Reader (including a few that should have been there already!)

Friday Fill-ins #145

Serendipity

1. “Sweet dreams” are what my husband wishes me every night. (Yeah, go ahead…”awwwww!”)

2. This beautiful weather we’ve been having seems like it was ordered especially for me.

3. Silliness is one of the great perks of having kids in the house.

4. As usual, I mostly plan to ignore this Halloween.

5. Outstanding or not, I like it just the way it is.

6. A clone is what I want right now! (I would get her to do the cleaning while I read a book and wrote blog posts!)

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to an evening at home (and maybe pizza?), tomorrow my plans include some errands and some reading, and Sunday, I want to do something fun, but I don’t know what it might be yet!

  1. Your celebration giveaways are so tempting–well, for me the ARC one anyway. I'm trying really hard to fight temptation though. 🙂

I've been following the FTC talk closely for the last few days. I can't say it will really change how I write reviews or blog. I can understand much of the frustration, but I can also see the other side of it–to a point. It all gives me a bit of a headache, to be honest.

Thanks as always for the links. 🙂 I especially enjoyed reading the house rules.

The weather has been really nice, hasn't it? Riley's enjoying going for daily walks again.

A clone for cleaning would be so nice!

I hope you have a great weekend, Florinda. I'm not sure we'll make it to the movie today. Hubby's not feeling well. 🙁

  2. Wendy (Literary Feline) – The giveaways will only be tempting you for a few more days :-). The ARC one seems to be the most popular – imagine that!

I don't think the FTC guides will change much that I do, either, unless I stop using my Amazon Affiliates links. No big loss – I'm not making any money from them anyway.

It feels like we're actually having autumn right now, doesn't it? So nice, when it's usually still hot and Santa Ana-blowing at this time of year!

Hope your husband feels better soon!

  3. You're not going to dress up to hand out candy this Halloween? 🙂

Once you get your clone, can you tell me where to get one? I need one to do my laundry and other chores. I'd like to spend more time having fun.

    Have a great weekend!

  4. Mike – Everyone should have a clone to do the chores. We could call them "Clone Drones" (or "Drone Clones'). I think there's a market!

I actually don't encourage trick-or-treaters, to be honest. They drive Gypsy even crazier than usual.

Hope you're not working all weekend :-).
