Would you say that you read about the same amount now as when you were younger? More? Less?
Why?Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!
When I was younger, I almost consumed books. I read all the time. If it took me more than a few days to finish a book, that was forever, and I always had my next book “fix” ready and waiting. And I never read much much genre fiction, which I understand often provides quick reads (particularly mysteries and romances), so I’d probably have gone through even more books if I did.
But that was then, this is now (hey, I read that one, too!), and even though I still read a lot, it’s not what it was. Things like work, and family, and life leave less time for it (but if I could spend my daily commuting time on a train instead of driving my car, that would give me a couple of extra hours for it every day! Not an option currently, I’m sad to say). Also, these days, some of the time I would have spent with books goes to blogs, both reading and writing.
And I still don’t read much genre fiction, so unless I’m on vacation or have big blocks of time available for some other reason, my “quick” reads usually take closer to a week to finish. Since I’m a one-book-at-a-time reader, that definitely affects the total amount of reading I can do. However, I still keep a book with me all the time, so I’m always ready to grab reading time when I can. While I may read less than I used to, I can’t imagine there will ever be a time when I’m not reading at all.
I’m a one-at-a-time reader, too, though I do have a big pile waiting to be read.
Lesley – I’m pretty familiar with that big TBR pile myself. Sigh.
I think the only thing I can say for sure is that my TBR collection is much bigger now. LOL I am not sure I read more or less than I once did. I read differently than I once did, for sure, but more? Or less? I only started keeping track of what I read 4 years ago and even in that time, there’s no obvious pattern that I can see.
I actually worry that when I’m old my sight will go and I won’t be able to read.
What about finishing books? Are you compulsive about reading the whole thing even if it turns out to be not worthwhile? I used to be. Now I have the fortitude to just quit.
Literary Feline – I completely know what you mean about the oversized TBR collection. And I never really tracked my reading until I started this here blog, but I know it just feels like I don’t read as much as I used to.
Working Girl – I have the same fear, would you believe? And my eyesight’s bad already.
I don’t bail on books very often, but it’s gotten easier to do it as I’ve gotten older, as you say it has for you. So many books, so little time, you know… 🙂
when i had little children at home, those quick mysteries were my primary reading material – and i still enjoy them on occasion. i definitely spend a lot of my available “reading time” online instead of with a book – but the whole “book blogging” thing is just so much fun!
Alisonwonderland – You are SO right about book blogging – so much fun, and so darn addictive!
