BBAW: New Treasures – Book Blog Discoveries

BBAW has an overall theme this year: “A Treasure Chest of Infinite Books and Infinite Blogs.”

Monday—First Treasure
We invite you to share with us about a great new book blog you’ve discovered since BBAW last year!  If you are new to BBAW or book blogging, share with us the very first book blog you discovered.  Tell us why this blog rocks your socks off and why you keep going back for more.

If you think I’m only going to tell you about one great book blog I’ve found since last September, clearly you don’t know me very well. I am terrible at limiting myself to just one of anything (unless it would make me fat!). I’m also not entirely sure when I started reading some of these blogs, to be honest. I know I picked up quite a few during BBAW 2009; others got on my radar during the 24-Hour Readathons in October and April, and still more came to my attention during Armchair BEA in May. In any case, I keep up with so many book blogs that it doesn’t take long before they start to feel like old friends who have been around forever.

Having said that, I’ll tell you about three book blogs that are relatively recent additions to my Books Blogroll folder. I like to share.

Amused by Books – I’m pretty sure I’ve been reading Leah‘s blog since late winter or spring of 2010, since I met her in person at the LA Times Festival of Books back in April. The title of her blog describes her attitude toward books, and her reading interests are very wide-ranging. The look of the blog is cheerful and colorful, and the tone is chatty and breezy. As befits the blog of someone “amused by books,” this is just a fun place to visit.

Colloquium – I think I found this blog earlier this summer while using the Book Blogs Search Engine to look for other reviews to link in one of mine (but I’m not sure which book review it was at this point). JHS (Janie) is a civil-rights attorney and musician who immediately caught my attention with her thorough, thoughtful, and well-written reviews. Her eclectic reading tastes seem to match up pretty well with my own, too. And while I usually read her posts via Google Reader/Feedly, her blog layout is elegant and appealing.

Forever Young Adult – “For YA readers who are a little less Y and a bit more A,” the tagline says. I’m probably a lot more A, and I’m only a sometime YA reader – I’m gradually overcoming my concerns about being too old for young adult, thanks in large part to the book-blogging community – but this recently-discovered group blog is a don’t-miss. Its “book reports” are screamingly funny, its grading scale is creative, and its drinking games tip you off pretty quickly that this is NOT YA for the youngsters. FYA is shortlisted for Best Young Adult Book Blog in the BBAW Awards, but it’s a winner no matter what the outcome of that competition turns out to be.

EDITED TO ADD a special shout-out to Michelle at the newly-redesigned That’s What She Read, who was kind enough to include this blog on her “treasures” list – I’ve read her blog for too long (under its old title, Michelle’s Masterful Musings) to have counted it for this post, but she’s another one you should discover if you haven’t already!

Have you checked out any of these blogs yourself? Do you have any related recommendations?
