Week-End Review, “Two weeks of links” edition

Since I missed last Friday, I have LOTS of links to share this week, so let’s move right along…

New Arrivals in my Google Reader

Dispatches: Links of the (last 2) Week(s)

Baking cookies every day ⇨ a daily cookie giveaway: a donation to a food pantry means food for them, and – maybe – cookies for you!

When a blogger is asked to change an honest book review, whose integrity is in question? (Names are named here – if this is an issue that concerns you, do check this post out) Somewhat related: On December 1 – the day the new FTC guidelines became effective – she disclosed why she discloses

Discussing the results of a poll about comments (which makes me wonder: what makes people willing to participate in a poll but not leave comments?); more discussion about comment etiquette

This introvert appreciates these ways to make introversion work for you (at work)

Thoughts about how we’re so ready to reduce each other to labels; a story about a family ready to reduce its retirement savings…to buy Christmas gifts; Christmas shopping on Black Friday, for the very first time

Ways to stay fit during the holidays – and possibly avoid making that particular New Year’s Resolution! Also holiday-related: when kids start asking those questions

=======================================================================

The year-end “best” lists that are starting to show up everywhere are being joined by decade-end “bests” this year. Popdose‘s “100 Best Movies of the Decade” post will take you a little while to read, but it will probably remind you of both movies you loved and those you never did get around to seeing; it’ll most likely spur debate over ranking and inclusions too, as lists like these normally do. I was pretty pleased with it: all three parts of The Lord of the Rings trilogy made the top 10, and I loved seeing Almost Famous come in at #2.

And then there’s their list of “100 Best Songs of the Decade”, which includes all too many that I’ve never actually heard (and I’m OK with that), thereby reinforcing both my advanced age and the fragmentation of music media. There are more songs that I DO know, although they’re from a couple of decades earlier, in WFDU’s “Top 50 New Wave Songs of All Time” countdown.

Can’t Find That Without a Map, via Not Always Right

Call Center | Phoenix, AZ, USA
Me: “Policyholder service, how may I help you?”
Customer: “I’d like to change the beneficiary on my policy.”
Me: “I can help you with that. Do you have your policy number?”
Customer: “No.”
Me: “That’s fine. What is your name?”
(The customer gives me her name, but it’s common and we have several dozen policyholders with the same name. I need more information to find her policy.)
Me: “Okay. What state do you live in?”
Customer: “Springfield.”
(Unfortunately, we cannot sort or search by city names, only by states. I do a quick look and see more than one Springfield in different states.)
Me: “What state is that in?”
Customer: “Springfield.”
Me: “Springfield is the city that you’re in. What is the name of the state that you’re in?”
Customer: *slowly* “Spring. Field.”
Me: “That’s the city you’re in…what is the state?”
Customer: *annoyed* “The UNITED States!”

Is anyone else wondering if the caller was a Simpson?

  1. I thoroughly appreciate your weekly round-ups! I know they must take a LOT of effort to make, so just wanted to let you know that the effort is noted.

  2. Kathy (Bermudaonion) – I've got well over 600 feeds in there, at last count. I need to do some weeding of the ones that have gone dormant, but I always hesitate to do that, because then I might miss them if they come back! But some don't update all that often, and I use folders and skim a lot, so it's more manageable than it sounds. I actually have deleted a few in the last couple of weeks, but I never mention those – trying to avoid hurting anyone's feelings!

Aarti – Thank you so much – it's great to be appreciated! But it's less work than it looks like, really; I accumulate the links in a Google Doc as I come across them. Keeping up with the blog-reading is the hard part sometimes!

  3. Thanks so much for adding my blog to your reader! Now I just hope not to disappoint. It's dangerous for me to visit your blog too often since I always end up adding more titles to my TBR wish list – your thoughtful reviews are always appreciated!
