Sometimes, something happens during your day and you just have to tell someone about it – or write about it. That’s one of the great advantages of blogging, isn’t it? But maybe that’s not the kind of thing your blog is about, or maybe it was something you’re not sure you want your family members to read about. You might even be one of those holdouts who doesn’t even have a blog – where do you go then?
You might be interested in checking out a new site called The Field Report – they’re looking for real people and their real stories. There’s no cost to join their community of readers and writers, and there’s even some potential benefit – your stories are entered into an ongoing, multi-round writing contest, with the opportunity for prizes. Cash prizes, that is, including a $250,000 grand prize – and as the great sage Yogi Berra says, cash is just as good as money.
Before you can submit your own writing, though, they’ll ask to read and review some of the pieces that have already been posted there. Then you can begin writing, with the option of creating posts that will stay on the FieldReport site as your own blog there, or pieces that you’ll actually enter in the writing contest as Field Reports in one of 21 categories. You can find out more of the basics of the site here.
I’ve joined the FieldReport community, and I’m looking forward to discovering some good writing and great stories there as a reader and reviewer…and hopefully contributing some reports of my own too. Maybe I’ll see you over there – why don’t you stop by and pay them a visit?

I had one of those moments just the other day–something happened that I wanted to share but couldn’t because I didn’t have an outlet. Unfortunately, posting about it on any site or blog would have landed me in trouble. Haha
The Field Report is a great idea. I’ll be curious to know how it works out for those who decide to take part in it.
Literary Feline – Let me guess – it happened at work :-)? Gotta be careful about where you write about that stuff, definitely.
I’ll be interested in seeing what happens with the site too. I know of at least one blog-less person who should think about giving it a try (looking at my sister…).
Let me know how that goes – and congrats! I’m not sure if I can commit to doing any more reading.
April – If I enter any of the writing contests, I’ll be sure to let everyone know :-).
Florinda – You’ll be a wonderful addition to FieldReport! :^)
Anna – Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I haven’t actually submitted anything to them yet :-).
I have entered the FieldReport contest and have to say it’s been a lot of fun. Of course honing my piece into their 2,000 word max was fun (yeah right!) but seriously just being on the site has been gratifying. There really is a lot to it. So many personal stories from people’s lives… it’s like This American Life, but home made.
Do check it out. Even if you’re not a writer!
Sandy – Thanks for sharing the “insider” view, and good luck in the contest!
