Saturday Review 11/1: Transition Edition

Today’s the day we officially take possession of our new residence! The movers are coming on Monday, and we’ll be bouncing back and forth between our current apartment and the new townhouse for the next few days. I’ll be offline during the transition, since we have a cable modem and we’re having the cable shut off today at our old place; the new access won’t be hooked up until Tuesday. I have posts scheduled to go up in the meantime, but you won’t be seeing much of me for the next few days aside from that. I’ll respond to comments when I get back – PLEASE leave me some to respond to! – but please don’t be offended if I don’t stop by your blogs; chances are I may have to do the dreaded “mark all as read” thing in Google Reader (gulp). Anyway, catch y’all later! Have a great weekend!

Meanwhile, if you haven’t already done so via mail or early voting, please DON’T FORGET TO VOTE ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4th! Because here are some of the horrible things that will happen to you if you don’t (that one is actually the last of ten election-related list posts on Whatever, and you really should go read them all).

Also, remember to “fall back” tonight – set your clocks back one hour, and get an extra hour of sleep. Who can’t use that?

*****Book bloggers and book-blog fans: would you consider attending a “Book Blogger Retreat” (meeting/conference) in 2009? Trish at Hey Lady! Whatcha Readin’? is hatching a plan for one, but she’s looking for interest and input – so please go over there, take the polls, and leave a comment! Authors think book bloggers merit some more attention from the industry too: book bloggers’ best friend Josh Henkin mentions this in a post about last weekend’s San Jose Book Group Expo (via Caribousmom).

*****Are you participating in November NaBloPoMo? It did change this year – every month is a themed National Blog Posting Month now – but November is the original free-for-all: 30 consecutive days of posting on whatever you want to post about (no theme), and the chance for prizes, too! I won’t be doing it this year, but I did participate last year, and it helped me establish two blogging habits that continue to serve me well: drafting and scheduling my posts, and posting (nearly) every day, so I would definitely recommend joining in.

*****I doubt I’ll ever sign on for NaNoWriMo myself – I don’t feel that there’s a novel in me – but is anyone here doing that? Are you doing it AND NaBloPoMo? Bless your heart and best of luck if you are!

Random reading from across the blogosphere
Kids and California’s Proposition 8; also, a rabbi speaks about “protecting marriage” (a friend in his synagogue e-mailed me this and gave me permission to link it), and when a yard sign is disturbed, its owner gets good and angry.

Do you only consider one issue when deciding who gets your vote?

A politically mixed marriage blends a little more as November 4 approaches. Also, as Election Day nears, how are you managing your pre-election jitters? And have you thought about how you might apply that political energy after Tuesday, regardless of the outcome?

School book fairs: creating readers or shoppers?

In both workplace and blogging relationships, context is a big factor.

Why mom-bloggers are justified in sharing their kids’ stories, and why sometimes multitasking is NOT the answer

“How does a smart, pretty gal get involved with a ‘deadbeat’ (let alone have kids with him)?” April and Kori have some answers. And as for getting “un-involved:” this took me back about six or seven years, and not in a good way, but sometimes I need to be reminded of where I was to appreciate even more where I am now.
