Fog, Dogs, and Sea Lions: A Central Coast Weekend

Sunny California doesn’t always live up to its reputation. During spring and early summer on the coast, the days are frequently overcast, cool, and foggy. The weather during our long weekend on the Central Coast, between Morro Bay and Monterey, was pretty generous with what we call “June Gloom,” but the mist and fog made for some really interesting photo effects.

FOG, Dogs, and Sea Lions

No filters were used in editing these pictures from the inner harbor at Morro Bay.

But for the record, it wasn’t all gray, every day.

On Saturday, we made a side trip to our road trip, taking Highway 1 up through Big Sur to Carmel and then along the 17-Mile Drive around Pebble Beach. They had fog, too…sometimes.

Fog, DOGS, and SEA LIONS

We didn’t bring Winchester with us, but we met some dogs willing to fill in for a little while.

Our hotel was right on the bayside, and sea lions and otters were our neighbors for a few days. On the drive north to Big Sur, we stopped to see the elephant seals.

I took about half my pictures with my iPhone and used Paul’s hand-me-down Canon PowerShot S100 pocket camera for the rest. (He prefers his full-size DSLR; I’m not that tech-savvy or ambitious.) I’m still getting acquainted with its settings, and I especially like playing around with focal lengths. Most of the photos in this group were taken at very close range on macro-focus, and I really like how they turned out!

I’m not going to make you sit through all of my vacation photos–I took over 400 photos last weekend–but I hope you don’t mind that I shared a few with you. (We love traveling to photogenic places. Y’all will be subjected to many more pictures from the trip to Italy next year!)

Show and Tell (and Link and Read) Sunday

Show and Tell (and Link and Read) Sunday

It’s the unofficial First Weekend of Summer here in the USA, and we are having some beautiful late-spring weather in Southern California! We don’t have many big outdoor plans this weekend, though–we’ll be doing things like seeing movies and going shopping. I’m planning to take advantage of an extra day off by spending time reading and getting my book blogging up-to-date; I’ve had one review about 3/4 done for several weeks now, and I’ve finished […]

The BEA 2016 Highlight Reel

I collected some of the social media highlights of my Book Expo 2016 experience on Storify and thought I’d share them here as well. If you’re not seeing the embedded story in your feed reader, please click on through to the blog! But first, shout-outs to some of the people who made BEA 2016 Chicago such a great time: My roommate and blogging BFF Kim (Sophisticated Dorkiness) and our hotel neighbors Candace (Beth Fish Reads) […]

The View Before #BEA2016 [Show and Tell Sunday]

The View Before #BEA2016 [Show and Tell Sunday]

The cruelest month that was April is finally over, although it has not yet fully decamped. But I will do my best to forget what it’s saving up for me for the next week. This weekend I’m in an avocado grove near the ocean–it’s a pause between one fray and another. Tomorrow I pack and prepare. Tuesday morning I fly to Chicago. I’m not entirely ready for BEA week, but I am more than ready […]

Open Eyes: What I’m Seeing

Open Eyes: What I’m Seeing

For a mostly-wordless Wednesday, I thought I’d share a look at what I’m seeing around my neighborhood lately. I took these snapshots during my walks with Winchester this past weekend. It’s been sunny and not too hot recently–perfect Southern California spring weather! I’ve done minor edits on these photos, but primarily for cropping and emphasis–no artificial colors or filters were used in the creation of this blog post.   This weekend, I composed a series […]

Reading? ‘Riting? Not Really! [Show and Tell Sunday]

Reading? ‘Riting? Not Really! [Show and Tell Sunday]

Since not much has been going on with either of The 3 R’s Blog‘s first two R’s lately, this will be brief. In fact, it has come to this: Yes, work breaks are a to-do list item right now I’ve deliberately been holding back from reading books for the last week or so. I haven’t wanted to finish anything because I knew I would not have time to write about it, and I still haven’t […]

Holiday Faves: A Christmas (Tree) Story

Holiday Faves: A Christmas (Tree) Story

I was originally going to make this a Wordless Wednesday post, but since today’s prompt for #AMonthofFaves is Tue. | Dec. 15 – Favorite Holiday Festivities – show off your favorite ornaments, home decor, place to go, holiday drinks, holiday eats, holiday themed reads I thought I’d flesh it out a little more and join in the fun! We spent this Sunday afternoon getting the house decorated…which, quite honestly, is mostly just the tree, but I do save a few […]
