TBIF – Thank blog it’s Friday! #2

Tuesday Thingers (hosted at The Boston Bibliophile)

Today’s
question is only marginally about LibraryThing but I thought it might
be a fun question anyway. It’s more about blogging. Everyone who
participates in Tuesday Thingers has a blog- some have a book blog,
some have several, some have blogs that are more personal, etc.- and
we’ve all chosen to participate in this particular way of networking to
build traffic, get to know each other, etc. So my question is: what
other weekly memes or round robins do you participate in? Is this the
only one? Why Tuesday Thingers and not some other weekly Tuesday meme?
Or do you do more than one?

I’m
glad Marie posed this question, because I’ve recently been noticing
that my blogging seems to be getting more meme-driven. I think that’s
partly because I do mostly keep to a daily posting theme, and memes
really can help both in structuring that calendar and
in sticking with it. But even if a meme is technically “assigned” to a
specific day of the week, that may not be when I post it. I have a
couple of reasons for doing things that way: some memes don’t require
lengthy answers, and I try to stick to just one post a day for the most
part, so it works better for me to combine a couple of shorter meme
responses into one post. You know how it is – my blog, my rules.

Here’s a typical week at The 3 R’s, and how memes fit into it:

  • Monday:
I’ll post my response to the Weekend Assignment, which I suppose could
be considered a meme, but I look at it more as a writing prompt.
  • Tuesday:
My Tuesday Thingers response will become part of my weekly “TBIF”
roundup on Friday. I’ve recently found the Teaser Tuesday meme/event,
which is a fun sneak peek into whatever I’m currently reading, but I
won’t actually post that till Friday either. However, if I’m
participating in Ten on Tuesday – which lately seems to mean
posting a list that my husband came up with in response to the prompt –
that actually will be posted on Tuesday.
  • Wednesday:
Like the Weekend Assignment, the Hump Day Hmm is more of a
thinking/writing prompt than a meme. On weeks when there isn’t one, or
I really don’t have an answer for that week’s question, Wednesday posts
are mostly theme-free. I used to do Wiki Wednesdays, but the “random
articles” I was getting from Wikipedia were just a little too random, even for me, and I couldn’t find ways to make them interesting posts. (Wiki Wednesday was born, and lives on, at Verbatim.)
  • Thursday:
I join Booking Through Thursday most weeks, unless I really have
nothing to say in response to that week’s question, but I don’t post my
answer until Friday. But since I don’t actually “book through” on
Thursday, it seemed appropriate to designate that day for posting book
reviews; and if I participate in Weekly Geeks, which posts book-related
assignments on the weekend, I’ll usually put my response to that up on
    Thursday too.
  • Friday: TBIF – Thank Blog It’s Friday!
That’s my most recent name for my Friday post of (mostly book-related)
memes, which will include any or all of the following, depending on
what I responded to: Tuesday Thingers, Tuesday Teasers (or,
alternately, the Page 123 Meme), Booking Through Thursday, and Friday
    Fill-ins.
  • The weekend: I’ll work on my Weekend
Assignment post for the coming Monday and probably prepare some other
posts for the week ahead – which may include an interesting one-off
meme or two that I stole from someone else’s blog – but actual posting
is light. I’ll usually put up a links roundup on one day of the
weekend, but other than that, there’s not really a plan.

Teaser Tuesday (hosted at Should Be Reading)

  • Grab your current read
  • Let the book fall open to a random page
  • Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12. NO SPOILERS!
  • Share
the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way
people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser
    you’ve given!
  • Leave a link to the blog post where you’ve shared your “Teaser“ in the comments to the week’s TUESDAY TEASER post at Should Be Reading. If you don’t have a blog, share the teaser in a comment on that week’s “Teaser” post.

Three new books have found their way into my house this week:

It
was possible that he could go back to ask Tennessee Moser for
assistance. She was family in some sense, the mother of his brothers,
and he felt for her genuinely.

 – Run, by Ann Patchett (new release paperback)

Today
was a Monday, which meant Dr. Lewis after school. She was wearing a top
her mom had given her for Christmas and a pair of earrings she’d gotten
from Steve and Kelly, very dangly and colorful, sort of like what you
saw in magazines.

Songs Without Words, by Ann Packer (new release paperback)

“You loved him, and you still love him. I wasn’t sure before.”
My Husband’s Sweethearts, by Bridget Asher (ARC, due in bookstores August 19, 2008)

Other Worlds – Booking Through Thursday

Suggested by Miko:
Are there any particular worlds in books where you’d like to live?
Or where you certainly would NOT want to live?
What about authors? If you were a character, who would you trust to write your life?
(This came to me when reviewing a Jonathan Carroll book – I’m not sure I’d like to live in the worlds of his books.)

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

Like some of this
week’s other BTT players, I don’t read a lot of science fiction and
fantasy, so I don’t really get much exposure to other literary
worlds; I tend to prefer fiction that takes place in places and times
that I can relate to, or at least recognize. Therefore, I’m bending the
rules for this one a little bit to include the world where books and
video meet.

Ever since I saw The Fellowship of the Ring for the
first time, I’ve wanted to live in The Shire. Besides, by hobbit
standards, I’m quite tall! I’ve always wanted to go to school at
Hogwarts. And although I’ve never really liked small towns much, I do
have one special favorite: Stars Hollow, Connecticut, home of noted
bookaholic Rory Gilmore.

I really wouldn’t want to live anywhere – or, more accurately, any time – before the 20th century, and I definitely wouldn’t want to live in Sunnydale, California (we’re working our way through Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs this summer).

I don’t know what author I would want to write my life. I can’t imagine any author would want to write me as a character; I am far too boring. But I don’t think I would want it to be Jodi Picoult, or I would end up somehow involved in somebody’s suspicious death.

What other worlds would you want to live in – or stay out of?

Friday Fill-Ins #84

1. You know you’re old when you walk into your teenager’s room, pause a moment, and say “What is this CRAP you’re listening to?” (been there, done this.)

2. My heart is divided between the left side and the right side reading and writing.

3. Dessert (I hear those Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies calling!) is what I need RIGHT NOW!

4. I have felt the freezing rain, I have known the depths of a snowdrift.

5. Gah, won’t these people stop talking about Pokemon (well, that’s really just my stepson…)!

6. Crank down that air conditioner as soon as you can! (It’s way too hot in here…)

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to hosting my Book Club meeting, tomorrow my plans include editing the Bookworms Carnival and Sunday, I want to have a good time meeting some of the other LA Moms Bloggers!

Got any big plans for your weekend?

  1. I really enjoy these big posts you do every Friday- very meaty. 🙂
As for me, I’m going to a quilt show this weekend which should be awesome- it’s a big regional show with quilts from 8 or 9 states usually and tons of vendors, mostly fabric but plenty of books too 🙂

  2. Well, thanks to Stephen King, I’m terrified of Maine. And Dean has me a little scared of northern California. 🙂

This weekend I’m running a 5K sponsored by my old grade school, my wife is running a half marathon, I’m going to a concert, and we have my neice’s birthday party. I’m looking forward to napping on Monday. 🙂

  3. Marie – Thanks! I enjoy putting them together, even though they may take people a little longer to read :-). Enjoy the quilt show!

Mike – Aren’t you supposed to be on vacation? Oh, right, that’s why you’ll be able to nap on Monday :-). Good luck with the 5K – and to Jenn in the half-marathon.

Never been in Maine, but since I don’t read Stephen King, it’s not his fault. And since I love Northern CA, I don’t think I want Koontz to ruin it for me. 🙂

  4. lol re: #1 I can only relate insofar as I used to say that to my brother when he blasted Black Sabbath back in the day.

The odd rosy haze was beginning to feed into the corners of her vision when a shadow loomed above. The vampire jerked, and then the pressure on her wrists was released.
    – When Twilight Burns, by Colleen Gleason (new release paperback)

I would love to live in The Shire, too! A cozy hobbit home would be perfect, especially Bag End 🙂

  5. I think I need ice cream and a nap right about now! Although I’m reading what Janet is and am eager to get back to it. Have a good weekend.

  6. Gautami -And I hope that you think learning more about me is a good thing (?) :-).

I saw in your post that we agree about Harry Potter’s world.

April – And perhaps, come next January 20, we will…(Haven’t read it…yet, but someone did give me a copy of Dreams From My Father recently.)

Tanabata – Enjoy that book, and your weekend :-)!

  7. Memes do provide me with a starting point sometimes. I’m not very creative on my own when it comes to thinking up topics to write about. I do enjoy all of the memes you take part in.

The Shire does look like a wonderful place to live. It’s just as wonderful in the books. And, yeah, Sunnydale is a rather frightening place even with Buffy and friends battling evil.

I hope you are enjoying your weekend, Florinda!

  8. Literary Feline -I’ve been re-introducing Tall Paul to Buffy because I really think his daughter needs an immersion course in it.

My two best starting points for general posts are probably memes and things I read on other people’s blogs :-).
